Requirements for those wishing to participate in vertical caving trips
- You must be able to identify all the gear you need and assemble it correctly on your person.
- You must be able to demonstrate the ability to ascend up a tree, perform a changeover, and rappel back down. If you are just learning, you should be able to execute this maneuver without error at least 3 times with no assistance.
- Before attempting any deep pits, you must successfully descend into and ascend out of a smaller one (80ft or less). Rusty's, Horseskull, and Scottsboro Mountain are good options.
- Always tie back hair; do not wear lose clothing.
- If you have not gone on a vertical caving trip in over six months, you must demonstrate your proficiency on a tree before rappeling into any caves. This can be done on-site.
- In order to lead a vertical caving trip, you must have participated in at least two such trips and demonstrated proficiency with creating anchors. For the first trip that you lead, you must not do any pits that are deeper than or require anchoring techniques that were not present in those you have done before.
