Biking the Big O, December 17th-18th, 2011

What: Biking 110+ miles on the Florida Trail around Lake Okeechobee.

Warnings: About half the trail (Okeechobee clockwise to Moore Haven) is nicely paved or easy dirt (except for a few sections that are closed for construction and require detours through towns or hopping fences). The other half is terrible rocky double track - I would recommend strongly against doing this half unless you have 29" extra-wide tires. There are very few signs and it is quite easy to get badly lost (I spent 4 hours biking through cattle ranches). The towns along the way are very culturally interesting with lots of ethnic food options. Except in the dead of winter, bugs are very bad at dusk. Clewiston has cheap hotels (~$40), but there are lots of platforms along the trail that fit one person each - there are also unsigned primitive campsites in some places. Biking at night is a viable option on the first half, but watch out for gates and other obstacles.

Participants: Frank, Jeff, Rudy, Nate, Nick, and Diane

Costs:

Gas: $15
Truck gas: $20
Hotel: $11
Giant medley of Cuban foods and nail polish flavored horchata: $10
