What:
Day 1- wake up in Managua (late night flight), bus to Rivas where we caught the ferry to Ometepe Island. Took a 3 hr “taxi” to our hostel . Swam under a full moon in Lake Nicaragua.
Day 2- hiked/rode a horse a few hours on Volcano Maderas up to a waterfall. Kayaked out to Monkey Island which is a tiny island infested with violent flesh-eating monkeys.
Day 3- Ferry back to Rivas and then taxi to Granada. We walked around Granada and got dinner, then stayed in the Panda Hostel.
Day 4- Took a truck up to the top of Volcano Mombacho in the morning. Hiked all day around the 4 craters. It has been dormant for many years and is covered in a lush jungle. We saw two-toed sloths and salamanders. Slept the night up there at the reserve. Also went on a night hike.
Day 5- Ziplined through the jungle on Mombacho in the morning. Took a taxi to Masaya for lunch and explored the market. Then went to Volcano Masaya which is active and has sulfur gas eminating from it. Explored a magma cave next to the volcano. Then we returned to the city for dinner and back to the airport in Managua.
